Celebrating National Principals Month: Spotlight on Mr. Thomas Sherfield

National Principals Month is almost over, and today, we are recognizing Mr. Thomas Sherfield, Program Coordinator and Principal of the Opelika Learning Center (OLC).
Education was Mr. Sherfield's second career, but he has made an impact over the past 21 years. He joined Opelika City Schools in 2004 as the district's Attendance Officer and, in 2022, was named Interim Program Coordinator of the Opelika Learning Center. A year later, he officially became the program coordinator and principal of the alternative program, where his leadership continues to inspire both students and staff.
"What I enjoy most about being principal is helping students discover their purpose and realize their potential," Sherfield shared. "Equally rewarding is guiding teachers in how they build meaningful relationships with students, ultimately creating more positive educational experiences."
For Mr. Sherfield, the most meaningful rewards do not come from titles or awards. His reward comes from moments when former students return as adults to share their stories and successes."Those visits remind me why I do what I do every day," he said.
Through his compassionate leadership and belief in the potential of every student, Mr. Sherfield continues to make Opelika Learning Center a place of hope, growth, and new beginnings.
