National School Bus Safety Week 2025
Each morning and afternoon, Opelika City Schools bus drivers carry our children to and from school. As part of National School Bus Safety Week, we are reminding everyone that safety starts with awareness, patience, and respect on the road.
This year’s theme is "Safe Stops. Stronger Communities." It reminds us of the responsibility we have to protect students on their way to and from school.
Hear Opelika City Schools bus driver Mr. Tony Avery and Sergeant Jonathan Glover with the Opelika Police Department share an important message:
"We just want to ask everybody to be considerate and watch out for our school buses every chance you get," said Mr. Avery. "If you see a child crossing the road, please stop. The yellow lights don’t mean speed up — they mean slow down because we’re preparing to put out our stop sign. If you do that, everyone can go home safely. You can either stop for our bus, or get stopped by us."
School bus safety takes all of us!
