Congratulations to OMS 6th grade student Kevin Lazenby who was crowned the Lee County Spelling Bee winner February 4.  Kevin will now compete in the state competition in Birmingham on March 6.  For more details see:

Opelika Middle School has been recognized by the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools as a 2010 Banner School.  This prestigious recognition was awarded to only 12 schools across the state.  The award recognizes schools that serve as outstanding educational models for other schools across the state.  Congratulations to all OMS students and teachers for this recognition!

The Opelika Middle School cheerleading team recently visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida to participate in the Christmas Day Parade.  The girls participated in Disney events alongside Celine Dion and the Jonas Brothers.

The OMS Wrestling team won the 2010 Opelika Duals by defeating Central, Prattville, Smiths Station, and Tallassee.  The Dawgs defeated Prattville 47-36 in the finals to claim the championship.

Mr. Shawn Jacobson from Auburn University brought a selection of reptiles to the Global Connections in Science class.  The students were able to learn the differences between various species that are found around the world.  Several students held snake for the very first time and found out they were not so scary after all.

The second annual Black History Knowledge Bowl will be held February 19, 2010, in the school's auditorium.  Teams in each grade level will compete.  The schedule is as follows: 7th grade--8:45am; 8th grade--10:30am; 6th grade--1:30pm.

Opelika Middle School will welcome students and parents February 9, 2010, to OMS Writes at 6pm.  This hour-long experience will have students and parents working together with team teachers to encourage writing at OMS and to share in the experience of the writing process.  This event will be in lieu of the regularly scheduled Parent Advisory Meeting for the month of February.

OMS is now collecting Box Tops for Education.  Box Tops for Education are found on many different products and may be redeemed by schools for cash.  Box Tops may be turned into the main office or to Beth Stepp in the PE office.
