VARSITY BOYS

The Opelika varsity basketball team improved to 14-3 with 3 wins last week, (2 victories in the Opelika Christmas tournament and another win over Auburn).

The Bulldogs hosted 8 teams last week for the 1st annual Christmas Tournament at the Sports arena on the O.H.S. campus.

In the opening game for the Dawgs, six players scored in double digits to bust the century mark against Benjamin Russell  105-38. Tay Calloway led Opelika with 17 points while teammates Jacolby Payne and LaDecker Johnson added 16 points apiece.

In game 2 O.H.S. scored over 100 points for the 2nd game in a row, beating Greenville 107-47 to advance to the championship game.

The Dawgs were beaten by 2 points by LaGrange High school in the Championship game. It was a nip and tuck the entire game, there were 13 lead changes. Opelika led by 2 at halftime and played the 3rd quarter close. LaGrange led most of the 4th quarter until Tay Calloway got hot for the Dawgs and hit 2 free throws to tie the score with under a minute to play. Dionte Mains , tournament M.V.P., from LaGrange hit his last 4 shots to pull out the victory for the Grangers.  Opelika was led again by Tay Calloway with 20 points and Montrez Hunter with 11 points.

OPELIKA vs.. AUBURN

The Opelika boys basketball team defeated Auburn High  50-44 over the weekend at the Field house on the A.H.S. campus for the 3rd straight win this season  over the cross town rivals and 6 in a row dating back to last season.

Unlike the prior 2 games, this was back and forth the entire game. Tay Calloway 21 points again led the bulldogs to victory. Teamate Jacolby Payne added 10 points several rebounds and a couple of block shots.

Opelika will travel to Phenix City on Friday to play Central High school in a key area game for a 7:30 tip. (Opelika beat Central by 1 earlier in the season)

VARSITY GIRLS

First year head coach Devin Booth has the Lady Bulldogs playing as good of basketball as we have played in over 10 years. The girls defeated Auburn High  48-33 for their 2nd straight victory over the tigers.

The girls are 9 and 5 overall and will travel to Phenix City tonight for a 6 o’clock tip-off.
