GIRLS BASKETBALL

New girls basketball head coach Devin Booth won her first game as a Bulldog, beating Prattville 51-43 last weekend in the St. James invitational. Alicia Beasley finished with a team high 16 points while teammate Kayla Whatley chipped in 14.

The Lady Dawgs returned to Montgomery  Saturday , to continue in tournament.  O.H.S.  defeated St. James 42-33.  The Dawgs were lead by Alicia Beasley, Jasmine Hurst and Bethany  Howard . All three girls scored 8 points.  Opelika lost in the finals to Fairfield High School, 54-30. All-tournament team member Alicia Beasley paced O.H.S. with 10 points.

The girls are 2-1 headed to the first home game Friday night against Lanett at 6:00 p.m. with the varsity boys at 7:00.

FOOTBALL

The A.H.S.A.A. released the new classifications for the 2010-2011. Region 3 is down to 7 teams. Russell Co. dropped to 5A, leaving Opelika, Auburn, Smith Station, Central, Northview, Dothan and Enterprise.  Without Russell Co. the Dawgs will have to find 4 non region games to add to the new schedule.  We already have scheduled Carver of Montgomery in game 1 and in game 5 Prattville has been added to the schedule.  The Dawgs will have to find 2 teams to finish the schedule. Benjamin Russell, Stanhope Elmore, Wetumpka and Valley have all declined an invitation to play.

Coach Blackmon may have to go out of state to find an opponent for one of the open dates. The first region game will be against Central and the last region game is against Auburn during the 9th week of the season.

CROSS COUNTRY

Opelika cross country team qualified 3 runners for the state meet held last weekend in Birmingham.  Sophomore Cordaryl Whitehead finished 22nd with a 5k time of (16:54), senior Noah Bartlett placed 35th (17:26) and 8th grader Emma Garner finished 21st with a (21:11) in the girls division. Emma was the only 8th grader to compete with the varsity.
